General Advice for Puppies and Kittens

Vaccination

Puppies:

  • First vaccination at 8 weeks of age
  • Second vaccination at 12 weeks of age

Kittens:

  • First vaccination at 9 weeks of age
  • Second vaccination at 12 weeks of age

Worming

Milbemax, Panacur Liquid or Panacur Granules should be given monthly until 6 months of age.

From 6 months of age we advise worming every 3 months with Drontal Plus for dogs and Drontal Cat or Profendor for cats.

Flea control

We recommend Frontline Combo Spot On - provides continuous protection to your dog for 2 months, and 1 month for your cat.

Microchips

A tiny microchip, encased in biocompatible glass, is implanted under the loose skin in the neck of your dog or cat.  Should your pet stray and be picked up by the local authorities or brought to a veterinary practice, their microchip scanner will read the chip's unique 15-digit code.  The PetLog secure database can then identify your pet as well as your name, address and telephone number, so that you can be reunited in the shortest time possible.

Neutering

We are happy to neuter male or female dogs and cats from 6 months of age.

We believe that there are many medical benefits to having your pet neutered.

Generally your pet is brought to us between 9am & 11am on the day of the operation.  He/she is given a thorough examination before being pre-medicated.  We will neuter your pet in the morning or early afternoon, and they will go home the same evening.

Pet insurance

We strongly recommend pet insurance.

Many pets get chronic or degenerative illnesses; some have accidents and some serious diseases such as cancer.  Veterinary science has become far more advanced in recent years.  However, unfortunately there is no NHS for pets and the latest diagnostic techniques, treatments and surgical procedures can be expensive.  We strongly believe that pet insurance helps should your pet have an unexpected illness.

Behavioural advice

Puppies and kittens need to be taught what is right and what is wrong.  The purchase of a behavioural book or a training book will help, however we recommend that you take your puppies to puppy class.  Please ask for further details.

Please note that these are very brief and basic guidelines, and that our vets or nurses will be happy to provide further information and advice.
